In good economic times or bad, many homeowners make a common mistake. They shop for contractors as they would when they’re buying a typical consumer good, like an electronic item. They shop around looking only for the best deal. If you’re in the market for a new DVD player, that may be a good strategy, but shopping for a highly-specialized service is different.
Price is important, but it shouldn’t be the only factor or even the major consideration given the significant investment you have in your deck or other outdoor wood surfaces. All contractors have different levels of experience, equipment, work ethic, etc. Sadly for consumers, most contractors don’t know how to restore wood, and many of them are simply painters who are only looking for extra work; they don’t have the expertise or knowledge that’s required to properly prepare a deck for sealer.
